Typical English Bibles order the Old Testament books per the Greek canon. However, the books were originally ordered per the Jewish canon, or the Tanach, before they were referred to as the Old Testament. The Tanach (or, Tanakh) is the most likely way the Scriptures were ordered as Jesus Christ would have read them. A clue to this is given in Luke 24:44, which says, "These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me." The Tanach is divided into three sections: Torah (The Law), Nebiim (The Prophets), and Chetuvim (The Writings). Notice how Jesus referred to each of those three sections in the order they appear in the Tanach. These three sections of the Tanach contain a total of 24 books, which contain the same 39 books of the Greek canon. The combined books are noted in the table below.
